US boycotts UN disarmament conference because of Iran’s presidency
The United States has threatened to boycott the upcoming UN Conference on Disarmament because Iran will be assuming the presidency of the body.
The US would not send its ambassador to the conference, said Erin Pelton, the spokesperson for the US Mission to the United Nations. She added that the US believes the Islamic Republic of Iran should be barred from any formal or ceremonial positions in UN bodies.
Iran will take over presidency of the disarmament conference from May 27 until June 23.
The conference is struggling to craft a deal on nuclear disarmament, preventing arms from spreading to outer space and halting the development of other weapons of mass destruction.
